Five Pinoy Expressions

Expression has been a part of every one’s life. Imagine life without expressions. A simple sting of the bee can be attributed by a simple “Ouch!” Life would be more complicated if one says, “Oh no, I have been stung by a bee!” See the differences? Whether if it’s used in excitement or profanity, expressions enhance emotions to certain situations. Here are the five frequently used Pinoy expressions.

Number 5. “Duh…WHATEVER”

Man says fuck while girls say WHATEVER. This is a common expression used either when one finds a joke to be corny or when one finds a situation nonsense.

Example:

Boy: Huy, may joke ako… sino ang papa ni Majin Boo?
Girl: Sino?
Boy: Edi si… PATRICK STAR! AHOOHOOHOOHOO!
Girl: Err, duh, Whatever…

Number 4. “Benta!!!”

This expression is used when one finds a joke to be extremely funny.

Example: Dude, nakita mo yung parody ni Nanay Dionesia sa Banana Split? Potek BENTA nyun!

Number 3. “Sabaw!”

Sabaw is commonly used in school particularly after an exam or when one is deprived from sleep.

Example:
“Shet, nasasabaw na utak ko, lintik na Philo long exam na yan”.

Number 2. “Pag sure oi”

This expression is very popular on Cebu, Davao and other places that speak the Visayan dialect. In English, it literally means, “please be sure about it”. I don’t know the origin of this context but I’m pretty sure that this expression is very popular.

Example:

Dodong: “Huuy ‘day, kalibangon baya ko!!!”
Inday: “Pag sure oi!!!”

Number 1. “Putang Ina/ ‘Tang Ina/ ‘Tang Ina mo rin!”

The ultimate pinoy expression. It is originally used when someone’s extremely angry or frustrated. But somehow, it became a part of every Pinoy’s situation. It can be used to different situations ranging from extreme joy to extreme madness.

Examples:

(Extreme Joy)
‘Tang ina dude!!! PASA AKO SA BIOCHEM!!! WOOHOO!

(Anger)
‘Tang ina pare, layuan mo misis ko kundi, papatayin kita!!! (Parang teleserye lang naman)

(normal conversation)
Oh c’mon, baha nanaman sa Espanya… ‘Tang ina.

Or better yet, it can be used as an MMDA sign:

TEEHEE! :))

T GEE I EF

T G I F

in English: Thank God it's Friday.
in Tagalog: Hay salamat sa Poong Maykapal at Biyernes na.

but in our native tongue: PISTEEE. MIDTERM CRISIS NA! EXAM NA NEXT WEEK. YATI RA.

So yeah we had a final schedule for our midterm exams, and I promise to myself that I will perform better than the previous exams (though the results were GOOD, except for one. Just don't ask.)

January 16, 2008 (Wednesday) 2.30-4.30 pm - Chem 17 Lab 1st long exam

[* - subject to prior change]

Let's do simple math, shall we?

Lab reports to answer, plus grueling assignments, plus surprise quizzes, divided by 24 hours, multiply by the number of neurons present in my brain, minus by the number of hours of my SLEEP, plus the number of hours of mere consciousness, minus the price of bluebooks, minus the ink of my gtec, plus the number of coffees that I had drank since last week

YIELDS TO THIS ANSWER:

Yes. A zombie. WHY? Well. Just take a look on my simple equation. It results to dreadful eye bags, heavy eyes, freaky DIET, nosebleed, blood dripping from my nose, ears, mouth, eyes (eew), sleep deprivation and most of all, MENTAL INSANITY. Crazy. Baliw. Buang. Sha-gue.

Oh yeah, our planned field trip to Camuigin was canceled due to the stern decision of our Dean. He had the point though but hopefully the place would be outside DAVAO CITY. Yeehee.

Haay. This is the REAL Life. Things are getting tougher than last sem and it would get harder next year and the following year, and the year after the following year until I reached the Med school. Oh yeah. So, again and again, I would like to reiterate this to myself that CRAMMING and PROCRASTINATING are subtle forms of BAD HABIT - not a GOOD ONE which I formerly believed way back in high school.

Back in our PE class, about 9 hours ago, I checked my weight and guess what?! I DECREASED BY ALMOST 6 POUNDS! Damn it. Last sembreak, I weighed a good 107.5 lbs., and now? I'm only 102 lbs. God. I wish that I could still manage to weigh a little more than a hundred ten, but because of accumulated stress, that would be way TOO IMPOSSIBLE :(. So I once played Table Tennis and I already proved to myself that I am a CERTIFIED JAR-HEAD. Jar head. In tagalog or bisaya - BANGA. Such a crappy loser whothinksheknowshowtoplaytabletennisbutinfacthedoesnot thing. Hahaha. But at least I had a two hours session of physical exercise good for at least twice a week. HAHAHA. Out of seven games, I only had two WINS and 5 LOSES. Hahaha. I just laugh at this because I really ENJOYED table tennis despite of the numerous number of loses.

When I got home around 5pm (and it was drizzling moderately hard enough to categorized it as a light rain), I was playing the piano to relieve my mental stress when my mom, dad and brother arrived. They brought something important.

A wall clock for my room. Para maging PRANING SA ORAS.

DONUTS. yumyum.

MILK TEA - an answer to my stressful day

Even how stressful UP is, I still love Oble's academic institution. It is the place where young and bright minds meet on a chaotic and entropic environment. UP will always be UP. BTW, before I end this post, let me leave you a song entitled: UP ANG GALING MO sang by the UP Centennial Band. Promise, LSS to lalo na kung ika'y taga UP :))

please click the play button.

Narito kami [nagpupugay]
Sa [unibersidad] ng aming buhay
[Ikaw] pa rin ang [binabalikan]
‘Di pa rin malilimutan
[Ikaw ang UP naming mahal]

Salamat sa iyong mga [guro]
Salamat sa inyong pagtuturo
Taglay niyo ang kahusayan
Taglay niyo ang karunungan
Hinubog niyo kami sa kabutihan

Sandaang taon na tayo
Lagi ka pa rin sa aming puso
Kaya’t kami sumasaludo
[UP ang galing mo!]
UP ang galing mo!

[Wala nang iba pang maihahambing]
Sa [talino] mo’t [angking galing]
Daanin man sa siyensya
Hi-tech man o kahit ano pa
Ikaw UP ang [nangunguna]

Sa iyong mga dugo ang kasaysayan
Dumaloy sa [pag-unlad] ng ating bayan
Sagisag ka ng kagitingan
Bandila ka ng kalayaan
Pag-asa ka ng mamamayan

Sandaang taon na tayo
Lagi ka pa rin sa aming puso
Sandaang taon na tayo
UP ang galing mo!
UP ang galing mo!

Sandaang taon na tayo
Dangal ka ng Pilipino
Sentro ka ng pagbabago
UP ang galing mo!

Sandaang taon na tayo
UP ang galing mo!
UP ang galing mo!

Hopefully I could still manage to survive the so-called "HELL WEEK". Au revoir. Good luck to ALL OF US.

Angat ang Pinoy

I was born in this third world country wherein poverty, violence and malevolent corruption exist. Despite these frequent accusations from other countries like states, European countries which they imposed several travel advisories in our country, we still manage to live peacefully and in reality, (or generally speaking, otherwise), Philippines is a peaceful country, though we still imposed that we're not perfect, right?

Filipinos or Pinoys are people who lived in the Philippines (well it's kinda obvious though). Filipinos are scattered in different parts of the world, most especially in USA, Europe and in the Middle East. Filipinos are highly unique in many different ways.

Filipinos are hospitable.

Ika nga, "Onli in da Pilipins." This was proven even in the olden times. Somehow, even in the new millenium, we sought and found that Filipinos are STILL hospitable. Just like the Big Brother Swap that happened just recently. You can see the difference between Philippines and Slovenia. Slowly, we begin to recognize how warm Filipinos were especially when the Slovenian visitor visited us. Filipino housemates made sure that their visitor had a homey feeling, despite the nostalgic feeling of the visitor. Likewise, when Bruce was sent to Slovenia, he was not treated like the Filipinos did in the Philippines. Needless to say, they are not that hospitable compared to us. Worse, he was given a racist remarks from the two Slovene housemates. Truly, we had a respect even in our visitors no matter what.

Filipinos are known to be innovative.

Needless to say, when a problem arises, they'll find certain answers or possible solution whenever a problem starts even if it's surreal.

Filipinos are born to be an intelligent being.

Ever wonder who invented fluorescent lamp/light? Well, he's no other than Agapito Flores all the way from Cebu City. The moon rover, which was used during the lunar exploration by Apollo 11 was created and designed by a Filipino (sorry I forgot his name). Their are many useful and significant inventions which Filipinos invented it, though unfortunately, our government had no time for them, and their lame excuse is that they didn't have enough budget to patent their inventions. So, with such desperate attempts, they sold it to American inventors and have their inventions patent by another name. That's a sad sad story.

Filipinos are STRONG.

We are strong in every different ways. Somehow, we were the first Southeast Asian country to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. We can't deny it, were strong physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Filipinos are known to be HONEST.

Ladies and gentleman, I had a good news on you. There are still lots of honest people who still exist in this country. And I really admire them. :)

Filipinos are BRAVE.

No doubt why we had so many heroes which are listed in our history like Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio and others.

Filipinos are CREATIVE.

We had so many artists in our country. Likewise, Filipinos are born to be talented. In the field of sports, arts, music, and other related media, we are famous for it in the whole world.

Filipinos had a Sense of humor.

Pinoys are known to possess this sense of humor, well almost all of us! Had you compared the sitcom of America to us? I bet in the states, their jokes are that awkward and worse, not that funny. We Filipinos had this mentality that despite of heavy problems, trials and dilemmas in life, we still managed to laugh like a silly hyena! I tell you. And their common reason for that? "Pampaalis ng pagod."

Filipinos are RESPECTFUL.

Yes and yes we are very respectful. Example of these are:

Saying po and opo when we talk to the elders, our undying sign of respect, the "mano po" and most of all, we say ate or kuya in our elder brother/sister or even for those who are not related on us. As long as respect is present, we can live harmoniously in our country.

Filipinos are HELPFUL.

Well, we lend our hand especially for those people who needed help badly.

What else can you add? Masipag? Masunurin? Cheerful?

I guess we Filipinos possess almost all of the positive traits in the world.

I hope even in the next century or millennium, Filipinos will still practice these good traits that we could be proud of.

We may not be the first world country that everybody's dreaming of, we may not own any nuclear weapons, we may not be the richest country in the world, but we still live as a Filipino - who lived in a colorful country.

Let's show the world what a true Filipino is!

**PS: thank you for those who greeted my mom! I love you guys!
