“Heroes on Wheels” program

This program aims to strengthen the support networks of local communities by providing much-needed proper outdoor and transport equipment to reach inaccessible areas.  Heroes on Wheels started by providing bikes to the Doctors to the Barrios to make them more mobile in their mission to reach far-flung areas which have limited access to medical facilities.  It has done the same with the medical practitioners who aided victims of Yolanda typhoon.  Heroes on Wheels has been a continuous act of alleviating the lives of our modern-day heroes so that they can touch more lives.

This year, in partnership with Firefly Brigade, R.O.X. and Fox, CORE brought Heroes on wheels to Davao.  Ten (10) brand new bicycles, complete with bike gears, such as Fox helmets and gloves were donated to Cycle for Life and Tuburan Institute.

This was held last January 11, 2018, at R.O.X. Abreeza.

Earlier in September of 2017, R.O.X. and Fox likewise donated bike gears to Cycle for Life to support their mission to gear up those unprotected bikers who need it most.

For donations, you may contact Ms. Monica Ayala of Cycle for Life 09224833948. Used helmets, gloves, reflectors, blinkers and the like are all welcome.

Stay Strong, Davao!

When a young boy from Syria got pulled out from the rubble of his home, you sympathized and prayed for him and his family. When the blacks and the LGBT communities in America were attacked by sexists and racists, you sympathized and prayed for their welfare. But when your own fellowmen down south got attacked by terrorists, you mocked and insulted us just because we claimed we are one of the safest cities in the country or simply put, you loathed our current President. No city or country is safe from terrorism. Not even New York, Paris, or Istanbul.

It really broke my heart after seeing photos and videos minutes after the attack. Those innocent people did nothing but to obey the law and did their best to provide something for their families. Everyone was just having a great time with their loved ones. It only took a powerful blast to change everything. Things will never be the same. Irreversible.

We Davaoeños have been through a lot for the past decades. We survived the rebel insurgencies during the 80s. Those were the days when civilians are mercilessly killed by the rebels and bloodshed is as mundane as feeding your pets at home or fetching your child from school. The city had survived and peace reigned for a while. In 1993, a bomb exploded at San Pedro Cathedral, killing dozens of churchgoers. Again, innocent lives were lost in an instant and the lives of their loved ones veered off course. Forever traumatized and scarred for a lifetime. In 2003, dozens were again killed when a powerful C4 bomb went off near the arrival hall of the old terminal of Davao International Airport. But we Davaoeños stood up in those trying times and fought hard to condemn these atrocities.

When your city got engulfed by a large wall of water, or when the swelling river slowly devoured your community, we didn't think twice to lend a helping hand and did the best we could because we are one - we are Filipinos. I got deeply hurt after reading all your hate messages. Worse, all of these came from my fellow countrymen. Honestly, you are all on the same fence with the terrorist group who claimed these attacks. I don't know about you but you don't have a heart. None at all. Both of you have a common denominator - heartless and ruthless.

Let us set aside our political differences and apathy, and unite as one. Together, let us condemn this inhumanity and try to live a peaceful, progressive and better life. We all need to stay vigilant in this crucial time. If Davao City, one of the safest cities in the Philippines, wasn't spared from terrorism, then are we anywhere safer here?

Stay strong, Davao. I know you will get through this crisis. WE WILL get through this. #StayStrongDavao #StayStrongPH

Addendum: Kudos to the Davao 911 Team, Task Force Davao, and all other personnel who were VERY efficient in these trying times.

Save Mount Apo

Mount Apo is home to various endemic species such as the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) and the Waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana), and to six indigenous tribes. It is also the highest peak of the country, towering at almost 10,000 ft above sea level.

The fire started last Saturday near its peak from an unknown source. Due to El Niño, the fire had rapidly spread downhill causing damages along its path. Volunteers and Davao's Rescue 911 have already responded to this crisis yet their efforts are becoming futile as days go by.

What is the national government doing to address this environmental crisis? Nada. Nothing. They are busy saving the ass of their losing candidate by producing comics on how he became a hero during and after a Category 5 storm hit the central part of the country. So much for rewriting history.

The Tale of the Techie Traveler: The Cyberzone Experience

It's more fun at Cyberzone! Oppa!

Finally, SM Lanang Premier, the 46th SM mall of the country, opened its doors to the public a few days ago and boy, I can't contain my excitement when I first entered this gargantuan mall.

Tagged as Mindanao's first premier mall, it houses new flagship stores like Forever 21 and other amenities such as Bowling Center, IMAX Theater and the SMX Convention Center. More so, stores are bigger compared to the first SM Mall of the city and as I explored the third level, I took notice of Cyberzone.

Crazy with Donuts and Pizzas

My grandmother usually spoil me with either donuts or pizzas when I was young. After school, she would always bring me to the nearest donut or pizza houses. I cry whenever she doesn't buy my favorite food. Spoiled brat!

go nuts donuts

These two are just one of my comfort foods. Nom nom nom! But just last Thursday, Go Nuts Donuts unveiled their newest meal - pizza donuts!

Because Turning Off The Lights Isn't Enough

It all started in Sydney, Australia.

Sydneysiders turned off their lights for an hour not just to conserve electricity but to raise awareness about the continuing destruction of mankind to our environment. Global temperature had continuously risen causing severe storms and extreme weather patterns in the past few years. Some marine and terrestrial species of animals are on the verge of extinction which will destroy our ecosystem.

Then after a year, several countries followed this global movement, including the Philippines. This year, Earth Hour is not just about turning off your lights for an hour; it's more than that.

Why Davao Tagalog is Funny and Equally Amazing

DISCLAIMER: This particular post is just a collection of stories about Davao Tagalog  (personal insights of the author included). The "how-to-speak-Davao-Tagalog-101" was originally written by Mr. Ian Garcia sometime in '98-99. I do not own that part, as well as the Nay Pruneset story (I can no longer trace that particular blog written by someone named  Weng).

For years, Davao has been known to be one of the most diverse cities here in the Philippines; having been tagged as a melting pot of cultures. True enough, a number of indigenous tribes settle in the mountainous region of the city and a number of people from different points of the country settle in Davao City for good. And because of that, the city has been home to numerous local languages of the Philippines - Tagalog, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Chavacano, Ilokano, Bikolano - you name it.

If the Filipino language is a composition of all the dialects and languages in the Philippines , you might as well say that the language we speak in Davao City is the real Filipino language, and not Tagalog.
