The Real Deal: UP Students

The public tends to generalize that all UP students are intelligent and leftist. But for almost (yes, ALMOST) three years of staying, thriving and coping with this one-of-a-kind institution, I come to realize that UP is an institution with a vast array of species diversity. Moreover, I used to perceive that kind of typecast. This is just based on to my observations and therefore it wouldn’t reflect to the whole system. But I surmise that it would be somehow similar to other campuses, or whatnot.

---

The All Around Perfectionist – this type of UP student excels in both academics (his field of expertise), as well as in other areas like in music, sports, arts. A much rarer species excels in ALL areas. This kind of species (ESTE) student is already considered as an endangered one. Some of them even hurt themselves since perfection is already on to them and the more they’re consistent with their achievements, people will expect more two them. They believe that perfection is not idealistic. Jack of all trades, master of everything.

The Field Researcher – this kind of student can be easily found in just one place – the library. Most of them are in the library to read not just newspapers or other magazines, but they just want to read additional references from their lectures. They believe that learning is not limited within the four walls of the classroom. Inasmuch as knowledge is concerned, they sometimes tend to question whether their professors are still teaching them the right things and all they need to confirm to read materials that are very reliable. It takes time to do this kind of thing. It’s neither a hobby nor an obsession, but rather it’s a responsibility that a student should practice more often.

The Analytical Writer – if you want to verify whether your laboratory reports or paper works are true or you just want to make sure that your answers are not that far out, then try to approach this kind of student. He is very responsible of doing laboratory reports but sometimes tends to think that doing the lab reports for the sake of others is an obligatory task. He feels secured if everybody copies his lab reports. When his report contains erroneous details it’s everybody’s demise. Though, trust is irrevocable.

The Novelistif a teacher or a professor is not a big fan of presenting his lecture on a PowerPoint presentation (either he’s lazy or worse technology illiterate and deprived), there’s only one person who can save the world before bedtime – the novelist. He’s known for his good penmanship as well as his ability to write fast. If he’s ambidextrous, it’s going to be a great advantage not just for him, but for everybody else. A lot of people will photocopy his notes, until his notebook is completely worn out.

Sleeping beauty This is the most common type since everyone can be like this. A student lacks sleep due to stress or the lecture is waywardly boring tends to snooze and snore inside the room. It depends on the teacher though whether to react with this kind of illicit behavior.

The Master of Oratorical SpeechHe is the exact opposite of the Field Researcher. He is so much contended with what the teacher had shared during the lectures and only reads her notes or the handouts. Thus, he only needs to memorize (and a little bit of analytical thinking) the whole thing! They sometimes have this technique on memorizing the hard-to-spell terms. And when they’re ready for the exam, they can manage to memorize the whole piece wholeheartedly. But sometimes, they do not use their intelligence wisely since memorizing is not an effective tool, believe it or not.

The Activist – since the institution is iniquitous for the academic freedom, one tends to use the much celebrated freedom for the betterment of others. They are often members or better an officer of a student council. They are one of the bravest souls in the institution and fear is not in their blood. They fight for what is right and they brawl for oppression.

The Joker, The Talker and The ArtistahinsThese group of people are still famous because they either brought laughter inside a boring lecture, or tends to talk a thousand words per minute or they are known to be the son of a famous politician and/or possesses a great looks. They coexist and coevolved with each other. They can also be found not just in college, but also in high school. But the intensity is stronger, of course.

The Frat/Soro King and Queen – Usually, they do not bond with their blocmates or classmates, but rather they are often seen in one “tambayan” together with their brods and sis. But sometimes, they mingle with their classmates but generally, they are difficult to find, unless you track their secret den. They tend to think about superiority.

The Outcast – They love to be alone and they are happy with it. Usually, he is recluse type of person and feels really uncomfortable during social gatherings. It takes time for them to be happy if he’s in a social group. They have usually low self-esteem and easily gets depress.

The Detritus Feeders – They are sometimes considered as pest since they sometimes do harm than good. Their life cycle is simple, actually. First all they need is to party all night long, and usually sleep the whole morning during the class. And whenever there’s an assignment, he won’t work with it, or just copy the whole thing, the exact thing to be precise without thinking. They have this mentality that if they’re already an UPCAT passer then they’re already as intelligent as Albert Einstein, no matter how many times they repeat a subject or how long they stay in the campus. They exude a perilous high levels of self-confidence and self-esteem.

I think there are so many groups in this institution but it would take me a week or two complete the list. But I guess this is already enough despite reaching already a thousand words in this entry as of this point. This entry serves not only to UP students but as well to other institutions. Moreover, generalizing concepts is indeed hazardous.

The important thing is this: We live in a very much diverse place and our niche does not solely reflect with our habitat.

Get it? :)

OPTIMISM and AUTISM

"To be a successful biologist, one must know how to DRAW."

God. My hands were all tired after three grueling hours of drawing circles, then various regular shapes of a plant's cross section of roots, leaves and stem. Mind you, those freaking circles drove me crazy. My hands were shaking but it was a big accomplishment though.

Yeahyeah. So last Monday, I went to school to register for my subjects next semester. So after a day or two of weariness and anxiety, I had finalized my schedule for the next sem. So, here it is:

TUESDAY'S DEADLY and THURSDAY'S NOT. STILL, no Mondays. Weehah.

Maybe I'll take an advance class in Statistics and History this SUMMER.

Last Monday, we went to People's Park and you guessed it right, we enjoyed the newly built park. I uploaded tons of pictures in my album so if you're curious about our wackiest adventure so far, just browse my photo album. Hehe. :))

TUESDAY. We had a surprise quiz in our Bio 3 Lab. Actually, it was a surprise as well as an interactive quiz. First we dissected a frog, then after which, we cut and opened her gut (since the frog was female) and identified the different parts of the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. I don't find it yucky or eeky, it's just, I'm immune with these gooey stuffs. Haha. So, I got a perfect ten , but I almost got one mistake because I was quite confused with the pancreas and the eggs. They were both yellow. ♫ LOOK AT THE STARS, THEY'RE SHINING ON YOU .. COZ THEY WERE ALL YELLOW ♫. Waaa. SABAW NANAMAN ako. Whatever.

MIND YOU,
her heart was still beating while we conducted an "academic operation" to her digestive system.

And her lungs were inflated. Kawawa. But we have to do this.

At that day, Joie had an LSS AGAIN - Rihanna's PLEASE DON'T STOP THE MUSIC. Hahaha. I just remembered Kim's ESnips Music Player on his blog. His player had a cool baby chick on it and danced like a funny duckling, yung tipong pina EGYPTIAN dance step ang ulo. Bwahaha. So, I introduced that dance step to Joie and Mark. We were all like ducklings at that moment, well hanggang ngayon. Hahaha.

WEDNESDAY. As usual. I woke up LATE, again. I didn't woke up with my alarm (palibasa ang alarm tone ko is FAIRYTALE by ENYA). Naku. Instead I was awaken by mom's CREEPY voice.

"KUUUUYYY, quarter to eight na, oh ano, may balak ka pang pumunta ng UP?"

Waaa. It's WEDNESDAY and first period ko is CHEM 17, 8:30 am! Waaa. So I didn't ate breakfast, just drank my cold frappe, took a bath, tapos got dressed with my PE uniform then off I went to CSM. I arrived five minutes before the time. HECK. Our teacher was ALSO LATE. We waited for 15 minutes before we could finally disperse outside room 113. It was 14 minutes after 8:30 am. Sheara, Ralph and Mark can't hardly wait so they went outside the room. Minutes later, they went back to the room, panting as if they were chased by a wild animal. Yun pala, paparating na pala ang wild animal sa room. Hahaha. So we continued the reports, lectures, just like an ordinary Chem lecture.

In our lab, I'm not used to Alberto's approach. Good thing for those who experienced and got immune with his approach for the whole semester. Yuri, Sheara, Cha, Joie, and Mikko were all immune by his way of teaching. I found it weird since he talked in a BRITISH accent just for FUN. Waaa. Natawa nalang ako kahit I found it corny and annoying. BWAHAHA. Peace Alberto Baloney. Hahaha. =))

Today's ASH WEDNESDAY but this idea didn't came across to my subconscious mind, that is to attend the ASH WEDNESDAY Mass. My classmates invited me and since it's still 4pm, and we're just a mile away from Immaculate Conception Parish, I decided to attend the Eucharistic Celebration of the Ash Wednesday.

♫ WE RISE AGAIN FROM ASHES ♫

FROM NOW ON, BAWAL NA ANG PORK, BAWAL NA ANG BEANS, BAWAL NANG KUMAIN. Waaa. Joke lang. Nangangayat na ako 'di pa ako kakain. But other forms of sacrifice will do. As long as you'll do some penance in this Lenten Season.

Tomorrow's Thursday. Another wonderful lesson in Trigonometry (yihee), Long Quiz in Bio 3 Lab, which fortunately memorized ko na ang parts ng vertebrates, pelvic girdle, pectoral girdle and anterior limb ng frog. Hahaha. I just love it.

BTW. I found this wonderful song entitled You Had a Bad Day by Daniel Powter. Actually, it's one of the OST song in the movie ALVIN and THE CHIPMUNKS. TAKTE! Di pa nanglibre si Chipmunk Kristalala para sa movie-ng to. Oh well. I'll just buy a dvd copy of this diminutive movie.

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down

You sing a sad song just to turn it around

You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride

You had a bad day

The camera don't lie

You're coming back down and you really don't mind

You had a bad day

You had a bad day

Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down

You sing a sad song just to turn it around

You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride

You had a bad day

The camera don't lie

You're coming back down and you really don't mind

You had a bad day

You had a bad day

(Oh.. Holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the brink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong

So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down

You sing a sad song just to turn it around

You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride

You had a bad day

The camera don't lie

You're coming back down and you really don't mind

You had a bad day

You had a bad day

Wee. I just loved this song. Kanta 'to ng mga OPTIMISTIC na AUTISTIC. Hahaha. Lol. I'll just leave you this message. I won't tell when and where I took this pic. PEACE OUT. Hehehe :D

Cliques

I'm very very very (owwzz) excited on this day: JUNE 7, 2007. What's this day by the way? Well, it's my FIRST DAY in UP! Yahoo!

Though, this day is like a program or some sort of welcoming us (the freshmen of course) so, no LECTURES (I think so??). Anyways I believe that I'm gonna be that shy kid, waiting for someone in vain to talk to me. Mind you it's very difficult for me to talk to someone whom I didn't know (call me snobbish but that's true). Meanwhile, I believe that college life could be so demanding compared to highschool life. It's a new phase of my life and I should pump my brain for the upcoming lessons most especially BIOLOGY and Chemistry. Hay naku, I need to reread my chemistry book since this subject is quite heavy - 5 units pare!

Oh by the way, students would be divided of the following cliques:

a] BRAINY HIGH - Obviously, this clique belongs to geeks! Well, not actually. Those who excells in academics particularly in Science, English, History and Math. Luckily I belonged to this clique (as what I've surveyed this a year ago) though I'm not your typical geek! Nyahaha. And most of all, not all geeks wore this particular attire - squeeky rubber shoes with loose-fitting shirts, shorts, multi-colored socks with their shirts tucked in. Ngyek, parang CLOWN??

b] SOSSY HIGH - Sons and daughters of rich business tycoons belonged to this clique. Armed with techie gadgets, make-ups, hair wax/clays and other beauty paraphernalias. They're the most famous in terms of their aura. (Huwwwaaat??)Okay okay, that's because they can spend their treasures doesn't mean they don't have brains, well that's what I've noticed in some movies related to college life. They can be as smart as those brainy kiddos.

c] REBEL HIGH - They can be obnoxious like a lone devil but they can be a nice dude. Though, they are rebels who seeks pleasures on peers, and other stuffs (don't tell me, pati drugs? oh no that's bad). They're troubled and they don't care about who they are and how they dressed. Being unique is their number one priority. Some sort of just being the center of attraction (or do they??)

d] NICE GUY HIGH - The most common of all possible cliques! And mind you, it's not easy to be nice though especially if you're mean or worse brutal. But don't get me wrong. I can be a nice guy if I want to!

Combine these F O U R would mean another chaotic (or memorable??) college life. I'm really excited. Sobra!

UP HERE I COME!!
